Madaba

Modern City of Madaba – City of Mosaic

The migration of 90 Arab Christian families from the city of Kerak, in the south, led by two Italian priests from the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem in 1880, happen to result in a major archaeological discovery.

As the city’s newcomers built their homes, using bricks from older buildings, intricate and well-preserved mosaics were uncovered. The new inhabitants of Madaba, aware of the importance of the ancient mosaics by their priests, made sure that they kept intact all they found.

Originally the Madaba Mosaic School, in 1992, the Institute of Mosaic Art and Restoration wasfounded withfunds from the Italian Government and the University of Ravenna. Located between the Madaba Visitors Center and the Madaba Archaeological Park, the aim of the Institute is to train locals in scientific techniques to conserve and restore the many ancient mosaics found in Madaba and throughout Jordan. Students are also taught traditional and the modern methods of mosaic production.

AUM is a traditional American-style four to five year university located on a 100 acre (33 hectare) stand-alone campus approximately 5 miles (8 km) from the city of Madaba, a historic region in the country of Jordan. The university is committed to devote adequate resources and energies that create a supportive and productive community serving the citizens of Jordan and, where appropriate, extending to the region and the world.

The cultural heritage of Madaba is especially rich, even in Jordan. During the final year of their desert wanderings, Moses and the Children of Israel passed near Madaba on their way to the crossing of the River Jordan. A battle site where the Children of Israel fought the king of the Hivites is near Madaba. Mount Nebo, where Moses stood to behold Palestine is only a few minutes from Madaba and is a major tourist attraction. Near the base of Mount Nebo is the northern shore of the Dead Sea where several modern resorts can be enjoyed.

North of Madaba about 2 hours is the marvelously well-preserved Roman ruins of Jerash. Even further north in Jordan are the mountains and Rabad Castle at Ajloun, the biblical cities of Pella and Gadara (now Umm Qais), and numerous other locations mentioned in the Old and New Testament.

Madaba is truly at the center of a great historical region.

The history of the American University of Madaba (AUM) begins with a decision by the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem to establish a university in Madaba, Jordan. He envisioned this new university as “a stepping stone for personal and community advancement” and as a place “where ethics, values and moral integrity are pursued at the same time as knowledge and scientific skills are acquired.” These concepts led to the adoption of the AUM motto, Sapientia et Scientia (Wisdom and Knowledge).

In 2011, the HEC approved its new name as the American University of Madaba (AUM). In 28 May 2013, AUM was incorporated by New Hampshire Higher Education Commission, USA. AUM is registered charity in the state of New Hampshire.

AUM is a traditional American-style four-year university located on a stand-alone campus (more than 100 acres) approximately five miles from the city of Madaba, a historic region in the country of Jordan. On the campus, 11 buildings are currently in operation.
